In the living room, the original tongue-and-groove wood ceiling received a new stain selected for its warmth and ability to maintain an aged look

Merit Award: Heritage Home

The home was built on large boulders that project into the lower-level rooms and are celebrated as organic art pieces

• Objectives: Originally built in the 1940s, this cherished family home passed on from father to son was ready for a transformation, which was executed by the project team of DNM Architecture, Sawtooth Builders and Andrea Lackie Design. The client’s vision was to honor the home’s mountain heritage while introducing a refined, modern sensibility to create a welcoming retreat for both current and future generations to enjoy. Honoring the family’s heirlooms was a priority, with a focus on thoughtfully integrating furniture, artwork and treasured collections of geodes and fossils throughout the home. The furnishings include a mix of pieces from the family’s collection, vintage pieces refreshed with new upholstery and custom contemporary pieces.

• Special and Unique Features: Perhaps the most special and unique aspect is that the original house was built on large boulders that were incorporated into the lower-level rooms—and are now celebrated as organic art pieces through specialty accent lighting and a backdrop of straw-infused Japanese plaster. A square of glass within the main-level floor offers a peek of these boulders below. In the great room, the original tongue-and-groove wood ceiling was sandblasted to remove the outdated whitewash finish, and a new stain was selected for its warmth and ability to maintain an aged look that ties the past to the present. The same finish was applied to the new cedar tongue-and-groove ceiling in the remodeled kitchen and bedroom.

• Why it Won an Award: Achieving the right balance between mountain and modern aesthetics can be challenging, but this remodel found that balance with a palette of rich and vibrant earth tones, textures and subtle patterns that create equilibrium between warmth and refinement. The result is a cozy, contemporary family home full of treasured elements that will be enjoyed for generations.
